Welcome to Gloucestershire Barracudas

What is underwater rugby?

Underwater rugby is a six-a-side contact sport, played in a swimming pool that Is around 4m deep. Players wear masks, snorkels and fins and the object of the game is to score by placing a weighted ball in the opposition’s goal, located on the bottom of the pool. At the same time, players defend their own goal and try to win the ball by grabbing hold of their opponents to tackle them.

And all of this happens while players hold their breath!

What our members say...

Joining a new team can be a bit daunting especially if you're not usually into sports, but the welcome people get at the Barracudas is second to none. We're so happy to welcome people who are up for trying our crazy sport!

I have always enjoyed swimming and being in the water but when I moved back to Cheltenham I was looking to try something a little different to swimming lengths. This led me to find the Barracudas underwater rugby club. From first contacting the club, all members have been welcoming and friendly making for a wonderful introduction to the sport. Having played for over a year now, I have no regrets and have met and become friends with a wonderful group of people - I would highly recommend coming along and giving it a try!

After hanging up my boots from playing rugby union, I was asked by a former teammate if I fancied playing rugby underwater. I have to say I was curious so I decided to give it a go as nothing else quite simulated the same contact and camaraderie I got from playing rugby and team sport on land. From my first go I was hooked; Fully 3 dimensional, full contact but without the impact, and a really amazing welcoming group of people. I have been playing for 2 years now and couldn't recommend giving it a try highly enough!

Paul

I was new to the world of underwater rugby and instantly enjoyed the range of skills required to play, as well as the fitness required. It's totally different from any other sport and the only sport to have a 3-dimensional playing element to it. Great team sport and looking forward to improving my game!
